Of course, as a designer designing things for myself, it is always more difficult deciding on finals because so many of the concepts work and look like the aesthetic that I want the company to have. So it took probably a year to come to this final main identity of the DBK abstracted as arrows and the secondary identity or mascot as a mantis with a crown. I became intrigued with the preying mantis when we moved to Richmond, VA because we had one that we saw all the time and that seemed to own a certain territory in our yard. We watched it grow from tiny to turning brown when it got old. I just loved how he was daring and often tried to hide by staying still. I loved how he would sway back and forth when he felt threatened. He was just the master of his domain, confident yet touchable. There was something about this that attracted me to making him my mascot, but of course with a crown that goes back to the idea of our constant travels and living in different states (Virginia being the first state to be explored by the King of England's people) and also my background as being Hawaiian in which there is a lot of our own royal history. This final mantis came from several abstracted sketches I made of our own little mantis in Virginia. Updated 2021.
